Carnival GT Mix – Princess Anisa & Terry Gajraj

Posted on July 6th, 2010 by admin in carnivals | 4 Comments »

Before singing, Anisa danced Indian and Chutney music. She won the 1995 National Mashramani Competitions in Guyana for the 14-17 age category, though she was only 13 at that time. This is where she recieved the name “Princess”, and it has stuck with her ever since.

Singing Soca, Chutney, Reggae, Filmi and everything in between, her versatility has enabled her to sing with Dil-E-Nadaan, JMC 3Veni, Angels Band, Karma, Wave Band, Ravi Sookhoo & N2, El Sadiek and the Sugar Cake Girls, and so many more. She has shared the stage with everyone in the business, including Hitman, Rasika Dindial, Alison Hinds, Rikki Jai, Anand Yankarran, Sonny Man, The Tradewinds, Calypso Rose, and so many more.

Today Princess Anisa is the lead Female singer for The Supertones Band, NYC’s #1 Party Band, managed by Terry Gajraj, her mentor. Her music has taken her to Toronto, Montreal, Florida, New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Guyana, London and more… now she is ready to see where the Music takes her next. For 2009, she has big plans to complete her debut solo album and tour more than ever with SupT Band, being one of the many musicians contributing to our West Indian culture

Terry hails from Berbice, that part of Guyana that gave us such LEGENDS as Dr. Cheddi Jagan (former President of Guyana) and Rohan Kanhai (leader in the Sport of Cricket); so too, Terry is a leader in the field of music & is the unofficial goodwill Ambassador for Guyanese Music & Culture.

Terry Vivekanand Gajraj started singing as a little boy in the FYRISH ROAD Mandir where his Aja (Grandfather) was the Pandit (Priest). Terrys Dad & Uncles (cha-cha) taught him to play various instruments such as the Dholak, Dantal, Harmonium, Keyboard & Guitar.

Terry is affectionately called the GUYANA BABOO after his biggest hit in 1992 that brought him international acclaim.

Terry is Guyana’s most charismatic and distinguished singer. Since his first record Soca Lambada was released in 1989, he has gone on to release over 25 more albums and has had number one records on all the Chutney charts in the Caribbean, North America and Europe. The 1990′s have undoubtedly been his decade, and the new millennium promises even more great things to come. Here are some brief highlights of an eventful career.

- Guyana’s most RECORDED artiste (29 albums and hundreds of songs over a 15 year span).

- Guyana’s most TOURING solo singer (performs in all the major cities & countries including Surinam, Holland, England & Spain). One of his most prestigious shows was at Wembley Stadium in London.

- Guyanas most CONSISTENT performer has performed non-stop every single week, every single month & every single year for the past 15 years.

- The 1st Chutney Singer to have his own WEBSITE (thanks to Chico Khan) to promote Chutney music worldwide.

- Terry has represented Guyana @ all the major CARNIVALS in the world including Labor Day in NY, Caribana in Canada, Miami Carnival, Nottinghill in London & the Mother of all Carnivals – Trinidad & Tobago (Spektakula).

- Terry was the first singer from the Caribbean to perform @ the Indian equivalent of the Grammys – the Millennium BOLLYWOOD Music Awards!

- He is one of Guyana’s most VERSATILE singers and does everything from Bhagans, Filmi, Chutney, Soca, Calypso, Reggae and Ballads. The ballads on his #1 selling “Sweet Love Songs” were a sensational success & still a hot seller!.

- The only Chutney singer from Guyana to perform with ALL the top names in the SOCA/ CALYPSO arena including the Mighty Sparrow, “Hot Hot” Arrow, Machel Montano, Calypso Rose, Byron Lee etc. etc.

- Terry considers himself honored to have performed with LEGENDS such as Sundar Popo, Sonny Mann, Ramdeo Chaitoe, Kries Ramkhelawan, Rikki Jai and celebrated Indian performers Babla and Kanchan.

- Apart from being a prominent singer, Terry stands out from the crowded singing field ’cause he’s also a MUSICIAN. He has composed and played all of the music, including Guitar, for some of his songs including the hit Tun Tun Dance

Brazil Carnival Salvador 2010, View From Camarote Ondina!!!

Posted on June 14th, 2010 by admin in brazilian carnival | 5 Comments »

The people from Bahia, are known in Brazil as those who most love parties. Almost every event is reason for a party, which should last as long as possible. Baianos do not deny this fame. The Brazilian carnival had strong influence from the Africans, All the samba schools in Rio must have a block composed only of baianas, women from Bahia. So, it is not a surprise that Salvador has one of the best carnivals in Brazil. According to Guinness, with 2,000,000 people (including 800,000 tourists), Salvador has the largest street carnival in the WORLD. While in Rio most of the carnival happens in ball-rooms and in the Sambadrome (which require people to pay to participate), in Salvador most events happen in the streets and beaches, and are free for all. As a consequence, the carnival in Salvador goes on, non-stop, for nearly ten days. Small groups called “blocos” pop up everywhere in the city, and they are soon followed by locals and tourists. A tradition of the carnival in Salvador are the “trios eletricos” (electric trio). Back in 1950, two persons, Dodo and Osmar (who today are legends of Brazilian carnival), put high power speakers on top of a Ford 1929 and drove around town inviting people to follow the rythm; it was a massive success. In 1951, the electric duo was joined by Temistocles Aragao, and the first Trio Eletrico was formed. Ever since, several trios were formed in Bahia, with much more sound power, on top of much bigger trucks; to follow a trio eletrico, just join the crowd, mind your ears, and let it go. Several of the most popular musicians in Brazil are from Bahia, and they do come back for carnival. So, you may come across free shows by Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Daniella Mercury, Gal Costa, Maria Betania and several other singers and groups; a sure presence is of Carlinhos Brown, Timbalada and the VoaDois.

Ride On (Ballad of a Carnival Ride Operator) (original)

Posted on June 1st, 2010 by admin in carnival rides | 2 Comments »

This is one I wrote. The character in the song is a ride operator on a traveling carnival.

Here are the lyrics:

Most people look down on me
From a seat on the Kamakazi
I sit at the center of the Gravitron
seems like everybody’s moving on, but me

Come and take a ride on the Musicfest
If you’ve got three tickets you can be my guest
Behind dark glasses a beard and long hair
I haunt this operator’s chair like a ghost

Ride on, ride on, the wheel turns
Ride on, ride on, Tilt-A-Whirls
Ride on, ride on, ’cause I know
I’ve got to keep moving on with the show, yeah

I’ll do a jump tonight then one more after
Pulling the Zipper behind my tractor
They’ll do a drug test to make sure I’m not dopin’
Gotta get these lights fixed before we get open
We set up and then we tear down
We pull in and then we leave town
Drive all night to the next spot
Wake up and we set up the lot once again

But I’m getting old and beaten down
My joints and bearings and gears are worn out
But when you die out here they don’t bury you
They just have you work the ticket booth
Well I’m tired of walking these worn out shoes
Tired of living like a tree with no roots
I’m moving down the road my eyes on rear view
I’ve got no home in this world to go to
