Trinidad Carnival 2011 – Swanky Tuesday (Tribe vs Island Ppl)

Posted on December 26th, 2011 by admin in carnival | 50 Comments »

Trinidad Carnival is the biggest festival in the region. This year it took place in March. Visited by many expats and other islanders; after several weeks of parties (aka fetes), calypso, soca, mas and pan competitions, the finale is the people taking over the streets to masquerade in their costumes on Monday and Tuesday. Tuesday, Trinidad style, is parade of the bands. It’s about glitz, costumes, fun … Swanky! (dictionary meaning “stylishly luxurious and expensive”). Two of the bigger mas bands that parade the streets and take hours to cross the main stage on the route are Tribe and Island People. So who is having the most fun? Watch out for Trinidad Carnival 2012 … Economic downturn. Party upturn. (Shot using the trusty Sony A1 and a circular polariser. The small camera with a big heart. Some people have asked why I use this camera. Well the Z1 would have meant no space for the 3 x “Angostura Single Barrel” rum on the home journey).

  4. Trinivalist Says:

    @1HARMONICLIFE I know you know by now that the song is ‘Advantage’ by Machel… and the song was specific for Carnival 2011… of course soca artist do sometimes borrow melodies from songs of past… but this is definitely no remake… because he’s singing about the ‘stage’ which was broken down some years ago. They gave it back to the people for 2011… so Machel said now it’s back, let’s take advantage of it.

    @olddocman Carnival TnT style is influenced by: religion – farewell to the flesh pre-lent, celebration of abolition of slavery, celebration of cultures and heritage (african, indian, European (mainly french) and amerindian (the original islanders). The two days are officially recognised as holidays but only through the will of the people.

  19. olddocman Says:

    It’s obvious that there’s a party goin on ! But what is the Celebration for ? A holiday like they do in New Orleans ?

    have looked.. is there no one who does cornet solo?

  27. kev151011 Says:

    @Bananalisk Fully agree with you, I had not read this when I wrote my comment.

  28. kev151011 Says:

    @FlierFrank172 full concur, I had not seen your comment when I wrote mine today..

  29. kev151011 Says:

    Conductor is a poser, if he behaved like that whilst I was playing a solo, I would have walked off and left him to it. Not a bad performance by the soloist though. Bit brittle in sound if you compare with Andre and Marsalis. Andre has not quite the technique but is a lot more musical. Just my humble opinion.

  30. smole133 Says:

    @FlierFrank172
    Or something is wrong with my hearing or he is really having control of what he’s playing ??

  31. Irudiar Says:

    @Irudiar
    *Back not bad. xD

  32. Irudiar Says:

    @leonardokala
    He injured his bad in a car accident, I believe, when he was little. It’s why he holds his trumpet like that.

  33. EdWatts Says:

    @FlierFrank172

    And Al Hirt has (had, sadly) more soul than either.

  34. leonardokala Says:

    Are his notes at the ground of this stage?xDD

  35. Barroilion Says:

    marsalis sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  36. wolf10lover Says:

    You need basics and sound/tone quality before control. He’s really amazing and has all those things. I’m already learning to play it and I’m 14

  37. smole133 Says:

    4:23 blind people would be suprised if you tell them that that is only one trumpet playing (not a joke to offend blind people, it is a compliment expressed in that silly sentence)

  38. TheKingofSlimes Says:

    @FlierFrank172
    Do you have any idea what about you’re talking about?

  39. kylel2364 Says:

    Flierfrank….to play this piece at the standard Sergei is you have to have outstanding control

  40. FlierFrank172 Says:

    Nakariakov is no doubt a virtuoso musician however he doesn’t have the control of Maurice Andre when he’s playing this piece. Andre makes it sound almost leisurely and unhurried, a walk in the park.

  41. h100083 Says:

    Amazing lip control hitting the low notes especially so fast.

  42. trompeta7bach Says:

    waxii

  43. rmlojj Says:

    @SanshiroOgawa
    why do you think that???

  44. shishirth Says:

    Brilliant trumpet solo ably backed up – a fine rendition!

  45. yoyoguy435 Says:

    it looks like the conductor is trying to fly away at 3:25 lol

  46. Nabokov50 Says:

    What a dismissing and condescending look on the violin player’s face at 7:40. Like to see him do better.

  47. jwhill7 Says:

    The conductor tried to make something out of this drivel. The orchestra players were mostly disgusted. Nakariakov’s technique is miraculous. In more substantial music, his interpretations are always estimable.

  48. ideal3000 Says:

    tremendous

  49. EmersonCarvalhoEsso Says:

    simply fantastic…

  50. Belatius5 Says:

    At 7:36, the guy behind Sergei, “Yeah okay, he’s pretty good at the trumpet”.
