An American carnival opens in Munich, Germany. Joe the barker befriends beautiful pickpocket Willie, finds her a job, and seduces her. Then high diver Frank hires Willie as his assistant, falls for her and proposes marriage. After their wedding, Joe figures he can still exercise his sexual hold over Willie, but tragedy interferes…

    Another unforgettably sensitive addition to every poetically beatific connoisseur of the spirit. Anne Baxter usually puts a bit TOO MUCH into her performances, including MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE, in which BOTH she and Yul Brynner got just as “POETICALLY” what they deserved, namely, ONE-ANOTHER. But she really WON ME OVER in THIS ONE, about as REDEEMABLY as her replacement, Sephora.
